In 270 BC, The Mauryan Emperor, the Great Ashoka founded a supreme council of Nine men, to collect information about various subjects and to preserve them for future development. These Nine Unknown Men were entrusted with protecting the Nine books of secret knowledge. All these activities were performed in secrecy, and no-one knows about these Nine men. If they retired or died, their successors would take over and continues their work.
This theory came into limelight in 1923, Tolbot Mundy, a British police officer who served in India, wrote a book on Ashoka's Secret Society of Nine Unknown Men. But many theorist claims that, today's society is also ran by those successors of Nine men. Either those successors are today's big personalities or common people, no-one knows the truth!.
Purpose of Nine Unknown Men Society: Emperor created the society to preserve and develop knowledge in nine different fields. The nine men were each given one book to guard and to preventing secret knowledge from getting into the hands of evil men.
These men were asked to tour various places disguised as Buddhist monks, spread ideas of buddhism and meanwhile collect information, to continue their research.
The Nine Secretive Books: Each book contained supreme knowledge which helps mankind to evolve and innovate their society. These mysterious guards of 9 books, protect and preserve them secretly. The topics of these nine books are -
- Psychology- the first book dealt with psychological warfare and techniques of propaganda.
- Physiology- it includes study of physical, mechanical and biochemical functions of living organisms.
- Microbiology- one of the myth, related to microbiology is that, the water of river Ganges are purified with special microbes called was designed by these Nine and released secretly into the Himalayas.
- Alchemy- it includes Transmutation of metals, many rumours said that during time of natural calamities the temples and religious organization recieved large quantities of gold from unknown source.

- Ashoka had charged those Nine men with the task of manipulating Indian culture and present it to the external world as a country of mystically oriented backward people.
- The Nine Unknown Men are apparently spread all over the world, with some of them allegedly holding prominent positions.
- Pope Sylvester 2nd and Vikram Sarabhai, the scientist who created India's space program, were the suspected members of the society.
- It is also being said that Indian scientists, Jagadish Chandra Bose was an ardent believer of the secret society. While some say that, he was actually a member of it.
- These Men keep on searching a new deserving person after them and transfer the supreme book and details to him for preserving and expanding of knowledge.
- There's no inscribed or any written evidences of existence of these people. In their defence, many theorist claims that Ashoka had asked these people to released these information only under certain circumstances, when their is a stable government exist.
- But during Gupta or Vijay Nagara Empire, we could see some spike in scientific temper of the subcontinent, so it's very possible that these information was released during their era.
