Hinduism, one of the oldest religion and most followed religion of India. The religion consists of very numerous theories and extensive history in it, that's why Indian mythology has always been a topic of curiosity among people. Based on many mythology this is one religion enriched with mystical creature, places, temples and miraculous supernatural powers.
It wouldn't be possible for us to talk about the in detailed description of Hindu mythology, but we definitely can discuss some surface level knowledge and unknown facts about Hinduism. Let's take a closer look that you may not have known!
1. Hinduism- Not a actual name of religion.
- The word Hindu dharma isn't the actual name of this religion but its actual name is "Sanatan Dharma" which means the eternal way of salvation.
- The actual word Hindu or Indu derived from the Sanskrit word "Sindhu" that means a large body of water or river.
- From historical facts, we came to know that the Greek people coined the word Hindu for the people who live beside the Indus valley.
- Most of the religion have a founder such as Jesus for Christianity, Buddha for Buddhism, Mahavir for Jainism, Mohammed for Islam and so on.
- However no one knows the exact timeline about the origination of Hindu dharam, so it's always been a question that who establish Hinduism..?
- According to Hindu scriptures, the most trusted theory is that the universe was found when the holy word "OM" was proposed. The theory expressed that there was nothing but the endless dark Ocean before this.
- However Vedas and other scriptures confess that, "Lord Brahma" the divine soul created the universe along with other two deities: "Lord Vishnu" and "Lord Shiva".
- The soul is immortal and travels different universe by switching from body to body. It is believed that, Earth is the final destination for soul to achieve paradise [Nirvana].
- Earth is a platform for every soul to get moksha or will be sent back to reformed into another life cycle, based on their Karma Chakra.
- There are several types of other creatures like Gandharva, Kinnar, Nagas, Apsaras and Vanaras which came into existence through Hindu mythology.
- These people belongs from various worlds [Lokas], that are not normal human beings, but holds many powers.
- According to many scriptures, to conquer the three lokas [heaven, earth, underworld], there were total 12 battles fought.
- Few of them are, Hiranyakashyap vadha, Adibaka vadha, and Andhaka vadha. However, in all these battles, Gods defeated Demons and ruled over the three lokas.
- It's just an interesting fact that there are unbelievable number of Hindu gods that are worshipped by Indians in Hindu mythology.
- But the fascinating fact is that there are only 33 main deities and the rest of the others are just there reincarnation or avatars.
- The 33 gods or Tridasha are divided into three categories- the first one is deities of Material elements [Prithvi, Surya, Varuna, Vayu], second one is personified deities [Vishnu, Indra, Aryaman], and the third one is Rudras, consists of five abstraction- [Ananda, Vijnana, Prana, Manas, Vaac].
- It was written by sant 'Tulsidas' in 16th century, a kind of prayer offering to "Lord Hanuman". Inverse of this prayer is written as follows -
- This statement tell us that, the distance between the sun and the earth is Yuga-Sahastra-Yojana, i.e according to Hinduism, 1 Yuga is 12000 divine years, Sahastra means one thousand and Yojana means 8 miles.
- Now calculating this figure we get 12000×1000×8 = 96 million miles, which is about 154.4 million km approx, which is very close to our 21st century calculation.[150 million km- avg. distance]. Isn't it amazing!!
- Our modern science is amazed to find that around 1500 BCE old Vedas has a deep understanding of universe, space and Cosmos which our scientist are still discovering
- Vedas of Hinduism are one of the oldest written scriptures that consists of many scientific and practical theories. Because of this The Hindu mythology and astrologer are very popular throughout the world.
- Its a scientific fact that, Ganga holds a bacteria known as Bacteriophage. It's a kind of bodyguard of Ganga that infects and kills other harmful bacteria that pollutes the river.
- Environmental engineer, 'DS Bhargava' from University of Roorkee, states that the Ganga is the only river in the world that decomposes organic waste at the rate of 10-15 times faster than the other river.
- That's why the river Ganga water doesn't go bad if been kept for a long time.
